In this section we will explore the different types of jobs that you may find that offer the option to telecommute from home.
Work is something you do, not something you travel to
Telecommuting is a work arrangement in which employees enjoy flexibility in working location and hours. The daily commute to an office is replaced by telecommunication links.
Telecommuting to work is facilitated by such tools as virtual private networks, videoconferencing, and Voice over IP. As broadband Internet connections become more commonplace, more and more workers have enough bandwidth at home to use these tools to link their home office to their corporate intranet and internal phone networks.
Today when you telecommute you can sit in your home office and be connected to the same phone system and computer network as your co-worker who is still sitting in a cube at the office.
This work from home arrangement has benefits for both the employee and the employer. An employer does not require the office space for you and this saves them money. If working from home makes you happier as a person, then this also benefits the employeer to have a happy employee.
As an employee you benefit in many ways when you work from home as a telecommute employee. You save both time and money in your personal life by not driving back and forth to an office each day.
Many companies do not designate specific jobs as telecommuting jobs or as work from home jobs. The decision to telecommute is made jointly between an employee and his or her manager, based on the feasibility of performing the work from home and other factors. So if you are already employed and think you could perform the majority of what you do today from home you should discuss this option with your manager. Here is a good article to read to help you prepare to sell the idea to your boss.
